He envisioned a race with dogs \u2014 a cross-country run with dogs \u2014 which he called \u201ccross canin\u201d or \u201ccanicross.\u201d<br data-start=\"502\" data-end=\"505\" \/>The first canicross event was organized in Paris, at the Parc de Vincennes, with an educational purpose \u2014 not a sporting one. All participants started together. Some walked, others ran&#8230; No one used specialized equipment, as it didn\u2019t exist yet: the leash was simply attached to the dog\u2019s collar and held in the hand.<\/p><p data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"995\"><strong data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"833\">1984<\/strong> \u2013 Gilles Pernoud continued his studies in Lyon and organized another event, again with the same educational spirit. This time, more participants ran than walked.<\/p><p data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1716\"><strong data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1017\">1986 \u2013 CANICROSS<\/strong><br data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1020\" \/>Still driven by Gilles Pernoud, the activity took a more structured form with the creation of \u201cV\u00e9to Racing.\u201d A canicross event was organized near the veterinary school of Lyon, in La Croix Laval park. A sled dog equipment manufacturer, \u201cGens de la Montagne,\u201d was present to sell harnesses. He also offered a kind of belt for humans, designed specifically for this purpose.<br data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1395\" \/>On <strong data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1415\">July 14, 1986<\/strong>, a canicross was held in Saint Pierre d\u2019Allevard (near Grenoble). This time, the event really took off: people were genuinely running, and a set of rules was introduced to ensure respect for the dog. The race had group starts. This was the <strong data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1682\">first \u201creal\u201d canicross<\/strong>, with about a dozen participants.<\/p><p data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1933\">That same year:<br data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1736\" \/>Rafael Nadal was born in the Balearic Islands \u2013 Maradona scored his famous \u201cHand of God\u201d goal eliminating England from the World Cup \u2013 Armstrong became the first American to win the Tour de France.<\/p><p data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"2556\"><strong data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"1974\">1987 \u2013 Similar Discovery in Belgium<\/strong><br data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"1977\" \/>Belgium was unaware of the events in France. Coincidentally, a similar evolution took place there, led by V\u00e9ronique Bourdon, a young, athletic veterinarian. She pursued the same educational goal: running with dogs to help socialize them. A training group was formed in Chimay.<br data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2256\" \/>She envisioned not just casual group outings but real timed races. To avoid the issues of mass starts, participants started individually. She quickly understood that holding a dog by its collar was not ideal. Instead, she cleverly attached the leash to an upside-down horse halter \u2014 ingenious, right?<\/p><p data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2664\"><strong data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2566\">1988<\/strong> \u2013 Gilles Pernoud launched the <strong data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2624\">\u201c4\u2019Pat CROSS\u201d Challenge<\/strong>, consisting of 10 to 12 races per year.<\/p><p data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"3006\"><strong data-start=\"2666\" data-end=\"2700\">1990 \u2013 BIKE-J\u00d6RING or Cani-VTT<\/strong><br data-start=\"2700\" data-end=\"2703\" \/>The first bikej\u00f6ring event took place in the Czech Republic by chance. It was meant to replace a skij\u00f6ring race that had been cancelled due to lack of snow. Participants decided to substitute skis with bicycles.<br data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2917\" \/>The goal was mainly to have fun, but above all, to provide dogs with a physical activity.<\/p><p data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3045\"><strong data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3045\">It developed and gained momentum.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3201\"><strong data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3057\">France<\/strong>: As shown above, France can be credited as the origin of canicross.<br data-start=\"3125\" data-end=\"3128\" \/>Together with Belgium, they are considered the cradle of this discipline.<\/p><p data-start=\"3203\" data-end=\"3633\"><strong data-start=\"3203\" data-end=\"3214\">Belgium<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3218\" \/>In 1988, Jean-Luc Bertichamps organized a canicross in Malonne as part of a dryland sleddog race, using the same course. He repeated the event in 1990 on the same circuit.<br data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3392\" \/>On <strong data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3417\">September 22, 1991<\/strong>, the first <strong data-start=\"3429\" data-end=\"3454\">independent canicross<\/strong> (not part of a sleddog event) was held in downtown Renaix, organized by Frenchman Jean-Luc Payre. It counted toward the French Challenge and featured <strong data-start=\"3605\" data-end=\"3632\">22 different dog breeds<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3635\" data-end=\"3984\">The <strong data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"3681\">Belgian Canicross Federation (FCB-BCF)<\/strong> was naturally formed in 1991 as an informal association, simply because there was a need to organize.<br data-start=\"3783\" data-end=\"3786\" \/>Fittingly, the president\u2019s name was <strong data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3838\">Jean Lechien<\/strong> (translates as &#8220;John Thedog&#8221;)!<br data-start=\"3869\" data-end=\"3872\" \/>Events were held in Markendaal, Morlanwelz, Chimay, Gembloux, Mont-St. Aldegonde, Loppem, Halleux, and Mouscron.<\/p><p data-start=\"3986\" data-end=\"4168\">The formal establishment of the <strong data-start=\"4018\" data-end=\"4065\">FCB-BCF as a non-profit organization (ASBL)<\/strong> was on <strong data-start=\"4073\" data-end=\"4094\">February 13, 1997<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"4095\" data-end=\"4098\" \/>That same year, the official national challenge included <strong data-start=\"4155\" data-end=\"4167\">19 races<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4170\" data-end=\"4349\"><strong data-start=\"4170\" data-end=\"4188\">Czech Republic<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"4189\" data-end=\"4192\" \/>The country quickly adopted the sport through skij\u00f6ring. When snow was lacking, competitors would run with their dogs for training \u2014 or engage in bikej\u00f6ring.<\/p><p data-start=\"4351\" data-end=\"4874\">The <strong data-start=\"4355\" data-end=\"4374\">first canicross<\/strong> in the Czech Republic was organized on <strong data-start=\"4414\" data-end=\"4436\">September 18, 1993<\/strong> by <strong data-start=\"4440\" data-end=\"4456\">Franta Burda<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4461\" data-end=\"4482\">Jarmila Slavatova<\/strong>, in collaboration with the Musher\u2019s Klub Centrum, the Cesky Horsky Club (Czech Mountain Dog), and the Sportovni Klub Bering Praha.<br data-start=\"4613\" data-end=\"4616\" \/>It was a joint effort between a sports club, a dog club, and a musher\u2019s club. The event was simply called \u201cRunning with Your Dog.\u201d<br data-start=\"4746\" data-end=\"4749\" \/>The following year, the event was renamed <strong data-start=\"4791\" data-end=\"4819\">\u201cHostivarsky Canicross,\u201d<\/strong> as it was held in Hostivar \u2014 a large park near Prague.<\/p><p data-start=\"65\" data-end=\"446\"><strong data-start=\"65\" data-end=\"76\">Hungary<\/strong> was also an early adopter thanks to <strong data-start=\"113\" data-end=\"129\">Istvan Sveda<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"134\" data-end=\"154\">Jozsef Babinyecz<\/strong>. A canicross event was scheduled in <strong data-start=\"191\" data-end=\"207\">October 1996<\/strong> during a dryland kart race in <strong data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"253\">Domonyv\u00f6lgy<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"259\" data-end=\"267\">MCSE<\/strong>, Hungary\u2019s canicross federation, was established in <strong data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"328\">1999<\/strong>. The first independent canicross and bikej\u00f6ring competition \u2014 not part of a mushing race \u2014 was organized in <strong data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"445\">2000<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"1104\"><strong data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"463\">Switzerland<\/strong> quickly joined the movement, taking part in the early French competitions. Understandably so \u2014 Switzerland is not far from Lyon.<br data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"595\" \/>Starting in <strong data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"615\">1996<\/strong>, a few private individuals discreetly organized canicross events here and there. <strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"712\">Daniel Brot<\/strong>, in the <strong data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"732\">Yverdon<\/strong> region (Canton of Vaud), developed the concept.<br data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"783\" \/>From <strong data-start=\"788\" data-end=\"796\">1997<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"818\">Willy Charmillot<\/strong>, assisted by his <strong data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"878\">Association Sportive Cynologique (ASC)<\/strong>, established <strong data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"915\">eight annual rounds<\/strong> that formed the <strong data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"954\">Swiss Championship<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"958\" \/>In <strong data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"969\">2009<\/strong>, the ASC became the <strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1039\">FSCS (F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Sportive Cynologique Suisse)<\/strong>, effectively transforming from an association into a federation.<\/p><p data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1703\"><strong data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1121\">Netherlands<\/strong>: The adventure began only in <strong data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1167\">October 2004<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1184\">Martin Gaus<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1193\" data-end=\"1200\">VCF<\/strong> (Flemish Canicross Federation from Belgium) joined forces to organize the first canicross in the Netherlands, held in <strong data-start=\"1319\" data-end=\"1335\">Bovenkarspel<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1379\">Stichting Canicross West-Friesland<\/strong> later took over organizing the event.<br data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1420\" \/>From <strong data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1433\">2009<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1451\">Bianca Koole<\/strong> took the initiative to organize new competitions in <strong data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1517\">Amsterdam<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1535\">Hilversum<\/strong>. It was the only time this happened \u2014 Tim White was not re-elected.<\/p><hr data-start=\"2312\" data-end=\"2315\" \/><p data-start=\"2317\" data-end=\"2339\"><strong data-start=\"2321\" data-end=\"2339\">2007 \u2013 Germany<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2824\">Karl-Heinz Raubuch, a highly talented photographer and sole editor of the monthly magazine <em data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2449\">&#8220;Schlittenhund&#8221;<\/em>, created a German canicross federation affiliated with the ECF to expand his client base. He was tasked with organizing the European Championship in V\u00f6lklingen. Unfortunately, his goal was profit. Multiple financial irregularities were discovered, and he disappeared, leaving the ECF with significant unpaid debts. As a result, the German organization was thrown into chaos.<\/p><p data-start=\"2826\" data-end=\"2947\">From 2011 onward, several athletes, including Birgit Kostbahn, reorganized the sport under the VDSV led by J\u00fcrgen Lueber.<\/p><hr data-start=\"2949\" data-end=\"2952\" \/><p data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"2988\"><strong data-start=\"2958\" data-end=\"2988\">2007 \u2013 The TDM Resurrected<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2990\" data-end=\"3208\">After a two-year hiatus, Alex Legrand revived the TDM (Troph\u00e9e des Montagnes). The task was very demanding, and he managed to organize only two editions. Once again, the TDM was on the verge of disappearing after 2008.<\/p><hr data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3213\" \/><p data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3247\"><strong data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3247\">2009 \u2013 The TDM Continues<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3249\" data-end=\"3761\">The TDM was not meant to disappear! This time, Yvon Lasbleiz successfully took over its organization. He moved the event to the Oisans mountain resorts. The race is very demanding, taking place over mountains with significant elevation gain and lasting 9 days, including two weekends. Around 600 people and 1,000 dogs travel from station to station. More than 15 nations are represented. Finishing the TDM is a true feat. In 2024, the TDM was not held due to difficulties in reaching agreements with the resorts.<\/p><hr data-start=\"3763\" data-end=\"3766\" \/><p data-start=\"3768\" data-end=\"3797\"><strong data-start=\"3772\" data-end=\"3797\">2012 \u2013 United Kingdom<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3799\" data-end=\"4044\">Richard Cook appeared in 2007 at the V\u00f6lklingen event. Very enterprising, he founded the UK canicross federation, officially affiliated with the ECF. He organized numerous events very successfully, and his number of affiliates grew considerably.<\/p><p data-start=\"4046\" data-end=\"4240\">In 2012, the ECF entrusted him with organizing the European Championship in Cirencester. Democratic irregularities and multiple financial anomalies benefiting his company &#8220;Canix&#8221; were uncovered.<\/p><p data-start=\"4242\" data-end=\"4514\">Following observations from the ECF Board and due to his attitude, Jean-Pierre Talbot, as ICF President, conducted an international vote via a bailiff outside of a General Assembly.
